Kakadbitta (Nepal) to Guwahati (India) 610 kms

Another day / another marathon ride; we thought it was the last day of our ride and called up the local media in Assam for a post ride press meet. With media in place we thought we would be greeted like war heroes who are back from winning independence to the country…..reality however, was far beyond expectations!

The last / second last day of the trip was all casualties. 1st one to give way was Abhinash – his electrical wiring suddenly went dead once he reached Silliguri in North Bengal. With no mechanic who would touch the bullet Abhinash was forced to hire a Tata ace right up to Guwahati. He put his bike in the vehicle which survived for only 90 odd kms or so.

The road from Silliguri to Srirampur gate (Assam border) was the worst road of the entire trip. He eventually had to find a mechanic who could do a makeshift job and get his bike to run the balance 500 kms.

Second casualty was my bike. I was doing a good 90 kms and hit a pot hole real bad…my “Swing Arm” (the part that houses the rear suspension) physically broke. Which in simple terms meant my bike suspension was non functional and the rear tire was in contact with the body. I had to hire a 207 to take me 6 kms ahead where I could find people who could do the welding job for me.

I eventually reached Guwahati at around 1 am in the night & called up my friends to check if they had already reach Guwahati. To my surprise and shock – they got stuck at a place in lower Assam called kokrajhar which is a BODO (terrorist outfit) dominated area. Owing to some tensions in Kokrajhar vehicles were taken in a police convoy. I had taken a different route and hence skipped the kokrajhar belt. My friends eventually reached Guwahati on the afternoon next day and Abhinash was the last one to reach late night the other day.

The trip does not end here. A mere 20 kms from Guwahati bang opposite the airport, Rituraj blew up his front tire at 60 kmph and had a massive fall. Fortunately he had all the safety gear in place and escaped without a scratch. A friend of Rituraj was coincidently going to the airport and saw the accident and was quick to provide all the necessary help.

The group eventually got together last Sunday i.e 8th July. My odometer read exactly 7960 kms and the calendar said 27 days. A trip of a lifetime. The adrenaline rushes inside, is telling me to start my Thunderbird and once again embark on this ride of a lifetime. a little voice inside my head tells me to do the “Myanmar – Manipur – Nagaland – Assam – Bhutan – North Bengal – Nepal – Mansoravar(china) – Delhi – Lahore (Pakistan)” route…..sounds ambitious???

Well Guwahati – Ladakh – Nepal – Guwahati 8000 kms trip sounded ambitious to a lot of people when we first spoke about it….who knows.. Someday..Maybe...till then keep riding..Keep rejuvenating and refreshing. Thanks Fiama Di Wills Men for all your support..
