Leh – Drass – The second coldest inhabited place in the world - 360 kms

We intended to start early at 6 in the morning, but got delayed to 9:30 am due to a broken suspension. Having repaired the suspensions only 6 days back, this spoke volumes about how tough the terrain was. Having completed most of the trip, we had achieved what we came for and now it was time to head back to Guwahati via Nepal. As soon as you leave Leh and hit NH 1 to Kargil, the landscape takes a dramatic turn & opens up so wide that you literally feel like crying. Mesmerized by the Leh and its surroundings, the Zanskar valley is at least 10 times even better. The Zanskar to Kargil tour called for a 5 day detour from our trip but since we didnt have the time and effort, we pushed back home.

On our way back home, we came across a hill named ‘Magnetic hill’. We were told to switch off the vehicle and it would go up hill for a good 15 feet or so which infact we later found out was a simple optical illusion but nonetheless worth a good ‘ah-ha’ moment. On route to Drass from Leh I got separated from my group and ran out of fuel. Having thought that I would reach Drass comfortably, I realized that I only had a half tank of fuel when I reached Kargil. Fortunately I ran into a biker group from Nagpur who helped me reach Drass at around 10 in the night. With the nearest petrol pump located at Sonmarg which was roughly about 115 kms away, there was no way that I could make it with fuel for 40 kms only.

At this point I went around in the local market to forage for fuel and food. With no fuel, I had to call it a day at Drass according to my original plan. With no restaurant open at this hour, I wasted over an hour searching for fuel and food. But suddenly out of nowhere I heard the thump of a biker group and rejoiced when I realized they were my group. Finally we retired to a hotel.
