Rest in Leh and drive to Nubra Valley via Khardung La Pass and back – 350 kms

Day 13 was spent roaming around Leh and securing permits for the way ahead, with Neeraj falling sick and recuperating. The following day we witnessed the most memorable stretch of our journey and the visually alluring valley took our breath away.

Slowly and steadily realizing our dream of doing this trip, the days were just lovely spent driving, eating and drinking in the lap of nature.

Dawn broke and gave way to a fresh new day which we utilized by visiting the Thikse Gompa and getting a feel of the Buddhist culture. While others explored the Gompa, one of us went to the DC office to secure permits for Nubra Valley, Khardungla, Pangong Tso and Marsi mikla.

Neeraj however developed severe altitude sickness and was not in a position to ride even 100 meters. We cancelled our plans to Khardungla for the day and roamed around in Leh checking out the local places and some light shopping from the Army Souvenir shop.

Come day 14 and we set out on the most memorable leg of the journey to Khardungla pass – world’s highest motorable road at an impressive altitude of 18380 ft. Located merely 32 kms away from Leh town, it surprisingly still took us 2.5 hours to reach Khardungla top. Since Leh is at a mere 11000 ft as compared to the steep climb of Khardungla at 18380 ft, we climbed a good 7500 ft to the top.

After 4400 odd kms and 14 days riding from Guwahati, we were finally a couple of hours away from the world’s highest moterable road with the view being a sight to behold.

All the roads were maintained by the Army, clearing the snow every morning. About 4430 kms away from our home, we finally reached the world’s highest motorable pass at 18380 ft. At this point it started snowing and it was the first time we ever experienced the snow.

Withholding by joy at the sight of snow, I controlled my emotions and exactly in 10 minutes we left the K top to avoid any issues of altitude sickness.

Spending a little over 1 lakh for the trip along with a 1 month leave from work, my idea of a rejuvenating life was being realized with every moment passing by. Riding through mountains, valleys, deserts and rainfall, this trip would be held dearly as a trip of a lifetime!

Ascending quickly from Khardungla top, the Nubra valley just 130 kms away was our final destination. Originally a part of the trade route between Tibet and Turkistan, the Nubra valley was a lush green fertile valley. About 8 kms ahead of a place called Diskit, this particular stretch of the road made for picture perfect moments.

In a matter of about 2 hours we again hit the desert. Coming from the hinterlands of snow covered mountains and valleys; we were now entering a cold desert. Such geographical disparity is something that only the Ladakh valley has on offer.

With sights like these that leave you speechless, the Ladakh valley’s scenic beauty is one experience to live by for the rest of your life. This should definitely be one of those things you need to do before you die!

A cold arid desert, the Nubra valley is quite a tourist destination that even offers camel rides. With pure virgin sand dunes to ride on, you can spend days altogether doing absolutely nothing in the Nubra valley.

Spending over an hour riding around, we finally headed to a hotel to unwind after the tiring journey.

We returned to our rooms at the Thikse Gompa, and ordered some ultra hot tomato soup that worked particularly well for the soul. Along with some onion pakodas and other snacks to go with, the combination of the piping hot food added the much needed warmth we were craving for.
