Sarchu to Leh via Tanglangla – 2nd highest motor able road in the world – 252 kms

Day 12th started early at 6.30 am with one of the riders facing Altitude sickness & vomiting. Having covered 500-600 kms in the plains with ease, the last 252 kms till Leh via the world’s second highest motorable road i.e Tanglang la Pass at 17580 feet were certainly the most challenging.

This leg of the journey tested both the man and the machine for our worth and proved to be a trial by fire.

Immediately after Sarchu we crossed a check post that marks the Himachal Pradesh state border. 40 kms hence we hit the Naki La pass situated at an altitude of 16250 ft making our way through a series of 21 hair pin bends called the Gata loops.

Encountering all kinds of terrain from snow covered roads, to uphill/ downhill roads, the last 252 kms had almost everything on offer.

Having travelled to almost all parts of North East India covering over 7 states and facing god forsaken conditions, the landscape that lay before us was one of the most beautiful I’ve ever witnessed.

Crossing the Lachung La pass at 16000 ft, we later descended to the most spectacular ride of our expedition; the ultra scenic Moray plains.

The Moray plains are an extension of the Great Tibetan Chamathang plateu that is 40 kms wide and stretches out to almost 60 kms till the base of Tanglang La pass.

Right when we hit the plains, the road came to an end and we were free to choose a path to ride which proved to be a slightly thoughtless judgment resulting in our bikes getting stuck in the desert sands. At an altitude of 15500 ft (higher than Rohtang), pushing the bikes out of the sand was a herculean task.

Having battled rain, snow and the heat; the good tarmac roads with snow on either side looked pristine white due to the clear atmosphere at 16000 ft. crossing the Tanglangla pass – the world’s 2nd largest motorable pass was very exciting. Ascending from the Moray plains which were a desert plateau, we finally thought of taking a power nap in the clear white snow having faced a lot of difficulties in getting here.

Spreading out the sponsor banners on the road right after the Moray Plains to thank all our sponsors.

After nearly 232 kms, enduring the most physically challenging – we finally reached the Panoramic landscapes of Leh. Clear blue skies, brilliant landscapes, clean roads and a cool climate made up for a rewarding atmosphere. Later we checked into a hotel 20 kms short of the main city run by the Thikse Gompa and the stay was not only rejuvenating but even very spiritually uplifting.
